Description

During my visit to my dad's house in Oregon, I was really looking forward to photographing the hummingbirds he kept saying he saw all of the time at his feeders. I had seen hummingbirds zooming around before, but to actually try to photograph one in flight (except when it is feeding) really is just about impossible, so I was excited when I spotted this tiny little guy who kept a perch in a tree next to a feeder. Luckily for me it was a fairly cold morning, which slows these little guys down quite a bit, since usually these little guys buzz all over the yard like lightning.

The identity of this little guy eludes me since there are two types of hummingbirds that are nearly identical and hard to tell apart, even for many experts. My guess is this is a young Allen's Hummingbird, but he could also be a Rufous Hummingbird. Any hummingbird experts, please feel free to lend a little help

My guess is that he's a Rufous, since I believe Allen's have green feathers along the back of their head and body, while the Rufous lives up to its name with the overall reddish or ruddy hue. What a pretty boy he is!
